Symbiotic relationships of aural perceptions

2017 - 2018

"Symbiotic relationships" is a workshop series hosted by Dimitra kousteridou in the Netherlands and Portugal.

It is focusing on Active listening and consciousness through developing awareness of sound. The intention is to combine listening and sound-making that does not represent independent processes; With the participants, we are zooming in the processes of listening, documenting, and describing the acoustic conditions or the sonic events through active sound walks and recording. Participants are getting in contact with active listening by concentrating on walking, movement, and the relationship between the hearing bodies and moving bodies through time, space, and place.

Together, we create an approach that will connect the self with the lived environment through radical listening and sound recording. We amplify, listen, and understand our own body basic sounds, discuss notions of space and environment, engage with the act of recording sounds. In the end, we are making a collective composition of sound recordings, creating a new sonic landscape.
Concluding in guiding auditory attention away from immediate sensation and towards more lasting effects on perception.

When the making of sound is a natural part of our everyday activities and also essential to our experience of space, a sound-in-the-making act with participants, audience, and makers creating it all together, simultaneously creates a meaningful shared and creative social practice.

Length: Two to three hours depending on the number of participants.

Audiable creations

2018

"Audiable creations" is a series of workshops started in Amsterdam and continued to Thessaloniki, Greece, directed from Dimitra Kousteridou and Evgenia Perisorati.
Can the auditory perception of ourselves change what we see and how we act?

During the session, we stimulate our senses to shape our perception through the act of painting.

We work together through a multisensory experience that will lead in a collective color-sound scape as well as individual artworks.

Our intention is to propose a workshop that combines sound-making, movement, color understanding, and painting that do not represent independent processes; on the contrary, they complement each other. During the session, we are zooming in the processes of listening, documenting, and describing the acoustic conditions of performative painting.

Participants are getting in contact with active listening by concentrating on movement, use of brushes and colors, and the relationship between the listening bodies and interactive actions through the process of painting. We are constantly amplifying, listening, and understanding the sound of creating a painting, mixing colors, and the way of placing them on canvas. This leads to a generative, continuously interactive ambient soundscape created by the participants who are painting while listening to it.

In the end, the participants take with them their paintings as well as an audio file with the collective composition of sound recordings, which reveals a new landscape of their creative process.
